Ashes Of Iron, Desert Storm and Karma To Burn – 23rd June 2018 – Think Tank Newcastle

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

A fantastic night of HUUUGE RIFFS kicking off with local heroes Ashes Of Iron with their groove-laden take on things. It’s great to see these lads getting better and better every time. Heavier vibe next with tour guests Desert Storm who I have seen before (also with KTB oddly enough) but again they have just got better and stronger.

Finally, Karma To Burn absolute legends in the genre I love this band and have seen many times and I am never disappointed. Any band that just have numbers for song titles of predominantly instrumental riffs that just build and build are getting thumbs up every time from me! The trio just connect on stage and you can’t help but be drawn into the hypnotic

Employed to Serve – 23rd July 2018 – Think Tank Newcastle – Review and photos

Employed to Serve – 23rd July 2018 – Newcastle Think Tank

This marks my second time seeing ETS this year. On the previous occasion, I was that blown away I ordered both of their records from Holy Roar. Brilliantly put together records, the sound is amazing and the colours were enough to entice me! I was instantly hooked. They returned to Newcastle for a headline show and they brought two suitably awesome bands, I was really impressed with Leeched and Rough Hands.

Tonight they play their second album The Warmth of a Dying Sun in full and in order. Which also happens to be my favourite of theirs. I last saw them with Code Orange. It’s nice to see them now that I know the material and I can appreciate the details and craft to the songs. It’s quite a testament to a band if they can share a bill with the likes of Code Orange and give them a run for their money! They made quite a lasting impression on me. On first hearing them it’s somewhat of a wild ride, you never know what to expect, an album’s worth of densely packed riffs in just one song. It’s overwhelmingly impressive!

There’s a lot of depth to their writing compared to many in this genre and that elevates them in my humble opinion. It’s a mix of hardcore and tech metal blended into something new and utterly thrilling. Easily the best heavy band I’ve seen in years. They tour a lot and through hard graft are breaking through and gaining some deserved attention and accolades.

It’s a short and pummelling set, bashing out the album in a lean 45-ish minutes. There are a few familiar faces in tonight and I spotted at least one Code Orange tee so it’s great to see they have made lasting fans from those shows. I think the more ETS play those types of support slots the more their audience will grow.

A good pal highly recommended this show to me. I was only vaguely aware of Far having heard of them via their hugely loyal fanbase. My curiosity got the better of me and the promise of a full band (Witching Waves) playing their classic 1997 album ‘Water & Solutions’ was too much temptation to pass on. There is something great about going into a show blind, I should really do it more often! I’m glad I attended it turned out to be such a brilliant show. I now have the added bonus task of discovering Jonah’s back catalogue 🙂

Dunes – 22nd May 2018 – Think Tank Newcastle – Photos

I was feeling a bit down in the dumps until I heard Dunes were playing! I popped in for their set and left my low mood behind! Three new songs tonight from their upcoming debut LP. Very very nice! This is the first time I’ve seen them properly (other than on our shoot for the Seapig video) this year. It’s hard not to like their music, easily my favourite local act in recent years.

Tiny Moving Parts – 9th April 2018 – Think Tank Newcastle – Review and photos

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

Firstly, my apologies to bass guitarist Matthew Chevalier, as there are so few photos of him. However that’s because the gig was so well attended that I couldn’t get near his side of the stage for dancing and singing fans. So I guess no photos is probably the last thing on his mind in those circumstances!!

Tiny Moving Parts - April 2018 - Think Tank Newcastle
Tiny Moving Parts – April 2018 – Think Tank Newcastle

Tiny Moving Parts are a family affair with Matthew and brother William (drums) and cousin Dylan Mattheisen on guitar and lead vocals. They are described online as “emo revival ” but there’s much more to that in my opinion. There are catchy pop-punk sing-alongs, insane guitar runs that some math-rock bands would be proud of and more!

It’s hard to believe they’ve been together 10 years now they still look so young and fresh-faced (Dylan has to be the most smiling happy looking frontman I’ve seen in years) but their latest album Swell (Triple Crown Records ) is their 6th!!!

Like a lot of bands in this scene, their fans absolutely love them and there’s a great rapport between band and crowd from start to finish and the band head straight to the merch table after the last note has faded to hang out with them like long-standing mates!! I’m quite new to these guys having only caught them opening for Fall of Troy a little while back but they impressed me then and even more so tonight! Definitely gonna be hunting down that back catalogue.
