Heavy Lungs – 23rd Oct 2018 – Riverside Newcastle

Rather than giving Heavy Lungs just a side note in the main Idles review, I thought the quality their performance deserved so much more than that! So here’s a full photo feature on their epic set! They have embraced the opportunity to hit some big venues with pals Idles on their sold-out run of UK shows, check out the Idles review and pics here.Β They seem like an ideal pairing, and there’s a vast amount of people at the venue for doors opening to catch their set.

Frontman Danny Nedelko has been immortalised in the Idles song and tonight he owns the stage. Stalking it like a man possessed, by the end of their short set he has the audience eating out the palm of his hands, hanging on every word. Very much a striking frontman, as the photographic evidence will show!

Heavy Lungs – 23rd Oct 2018 – Riverside Newcastle

They’re much more straight punk than Idles and really reminded me of early Bad Breeding, albeit a much more accessible and less extreme version, whilst channelling the vibe of PiL.

They’ve just announced another UK tour which includes a stop at Newcastle Think Tank in January 2019. On the strength of tonight’s performance, they are certainly ones to watch and I think I’ll have to go catch them again!

L.A. GUNS | JARED JAMES NICHOLS | 02.09.18 | Newcastle Riverside | REVIEW and PHOTOS

L.A. GUNS | JARED JAMES NICHOLS | 02.09.18 | Newcastle Riverside | REVIEW and PHOTOS

L.A. Guns | Jared James NicholsΒ – 2nd September 2018 – Newcastle Riverside

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

Opening the proceedings tonight is the blues power hero Jared James Nichols who is swiftly becoming a very familiar face in these parts having played with Walter Trout, Glenn Hughes, BOC, and Stone Broken to name just a few over the last two years or so! He is greeted with a friendly welcome as he kicks into gear with Don’t Be Scared from the Black Magic album. It’s kind of an odd pairing tonight as Jared is opening for LA Guns who are more steeped in the history of the more dirty rock ‘n’ roll of the LA strip than the fingerpicking blues groove he excels in HOWEVER it doesn’t take long for the Newcastle crowd to warm to the trio absolutely tearing it up through this short sharp set!!

Jared introduces Tracii Guns to the stage where they kick out the Sabbath Classic N.I.B and it’s obvious to all that they are just having a ball! Honey Forgive Me & Can You Feel It are two other originals aired tonight and like every other time I have seen Jared they end on a riotous version of Mountain Mississippi Queen by which time the crowd are firmly on board and queuing to meet the band and buy merch as soon as they leave the stage!

I’m pretty certain L.A. Guns never got to play Newcastle with any lineup so to see them here tonight on such top form was an absolute treat! The PA cranking Ozzy’s Diary of A Madman as an intro got the mood going especially with added live riffs from Tracii Guns side stage and then out they came straight into The Devil Made Me Do It from The Missing Peace album! Phil Lewis’s vocal was absolutely spot on every song old and new but for me, the star of the show was Tracii Guns! I knew the history of the band (Girl, GnR, etc) and remember playing tracks like One More Reason and Sex Action (both given a great outing here tonight too) at the rock clubs I DJ’d at but I have to admit I’d never realised what a fantastic player Tracii is! Not just the riffs and solos or the visuals like the violin bow solo but the technique and tone was just awesome.

Rip & Tear and The Ballad Of Jayne were another couple of highlights. Along with covers of I Wanna Be Your Man and Red House before bringing Jared James Nichols back out to take part in what they call the Jelly Jam! The whole band just seem at ease with themselves playing old classics and new album cuts side by side much to the delight of the crowd who unlike a lot of bands of this ilk weren’t just there to see the hits Here’s hoping theyΒ don’t leave it as long for a second visit.

GHOSTFACE KILLAH AND KILLAH PRIEST | 11.06.18 | Newcastle Riverside

Ghostface Killah and Killah Priest – 11th June 2018 – Newcastle Riverside

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

Hip-hop royalty hit the Toon with what will be in a lot of peoples top gigs of the year. There was a slight bit of anxiousness beforehand as a previous nights gig was cut very short with Ghostface walking off stage and the Wu-Tang show at the O2 had been hit and miss with a lot of folks. However, all fears were quelled once the duo took the stage and ripped through a set of classic tunes and not just Ghostface / Priest solo stuff either there were all manner of Wu-Tang classics in there for everyone to throw up their “W’s” to lots of happy hip-hop heads in the house that night !!

BRITISH SEA POWER | 06.05.18 | Hit the North Festival

British Sea Power – 6th May 2018 – Hit the North Festival @ Riverside – Photos

Better late than never. It’s been a rollercoaster week or two since this amazing show. This marks the 3rd time seeing and photoing them in 13 months. BSP gigs are always an uplifting experience. BSP should be allowed on the NHS I didn’t stop smiling for about 5 days after this one.

They whipped out the hits for this headlining appearance at the Riverside as part of Hit The North Festival. Check out the setlist!!

Marmozets – February 2018 – Newcastle Riverside

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

Another band that it has been a pleasure watching rise through the venues from 100 capacity, to a soldout packed to the rafters Riverside tonight! What makes it even better is they’ve done it without compromising their sound.

They are still that visceral noisy bastard of a five piece! Tracks from the new album sound massive alongside old favourites and are met with as much enthusiasm from the fans. Onward and upwards as they say I reckon its sold out main room O2 next time and they’ll smash it, I’m sure.

THERION – February 2018 – Newcastle Riverside – PHOTO FEATURE

THERION – February 2018 – Newcastle Riverside – PHOTO FEATURE

Therion – 6th February 2018 – Newcastle Riverside

For 2018 I’ve set myself the goal of seeing bands and genres that I wouldn’t normally see. Therion and their symphonic metal seemed to fit that goal perfectly. A hugely enjoyable act to photo. There’s always something happening and dramatic performances to try and capture. Somewhat overwhelming and I hope I’ve managed to do them justice in this selection of images.

I was shocked at the poor attendance for the gig. Despite this, the band performed impeccably giving the fans a show that they’d remember and cherish.
