Lonely The Brave – 31st March 2017 – Newcastle University

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

First of all let me apologise, I just couldn’t get my settings sorted for this one which is annoying as I love this band! Oddly tonight all three bands on the bill are headliners in their own right, with Fatherson not long back from selling out the Cluny. Lonely The Brave, who have been out promoting their second album both headlining and opening huge arenas for Biffy across Europe and this tours headliners Mallory Knox.

However this is a kind of a mates package as all the bands know each other and have toured together before! Tonight was the 12th or 13th (I have lost count) time I have seen Lonely The Brave and to be honest it never gets old. The passion they have for their songs is incredible all of them singing every lyric even though only David is actually at a mic until backing vocals are needed.

I still get goosebumps hearing the crowd singing the chorus’s back at them no matter how many times I hear it. They are out on the release of a new EP Diamond Days but the short sharp set features tracks from both albums too. I’d love to see them crack the USA soon, I reckon there’s a huge following for them just waiting!! They have come a long way in the last few years and it shouldn’t be too long before they are a LOT of peoples favourite band.

IDLES | 22.03.17 |Think Tank Newcastle | REVIEW and PHOTOS

IDLES – 22nd March 2017 – Think Tank Newcastle

I’ve been very jaded with new music in the last few years. At last here’s a band that can excite a bored gig-goer. Good music, good performance, good crowd and no bullshit. A band visibly enjoying their gigs, indulging in the live experience and of course the tour essential; Buckfast. This is more like it! Local support from Dunes and Mouses impressed too (features on those to follow separately).

There’s a distinct vibe of anticipation in the air. Heel/Heal begins the night and you can tell they mean business. Singer Joe Talbot stalking the stage, poised and ready to pounce.

Phlegm stalactites entertained and disgusted in equal measures.  I shan’t go into the grim details!

Bulk of the set comes from debut Brutalism. Material from the ace ‘Meat’ EP is missing. Or outgrown is probably more accurate.

Talking to the drummer and guitarist before the gig I discovered two top blokes (troopers having braved the Newcastle rain storm to track down Brown Ale on draft!) thoroughly enthralled and blessed to have such a great response to the tour (which included SXSW in Austin just a couple of days before this show) and album. That energy and appreciation was fed directly into the show.

Refreshing, clever and essential f**king good time music delivered by a well-honed band. They’ve been going for some years and at last they’re grabbing the attention of a wider audience. I look forward to the day I can say I saw them play to a small crowd. I couldn’t even buy a copy of the LP as they’d sold out 🙁 This lot are going places.

The band draw a lot of comparisons, which if I’m honest is starting to bug me. I’ll quote myself from a few months back. “There’s a lot of easy comparisons in their sound (which I won’t make) the sum of it’s parts is equal something far greater and deserves to be recognised as such.”

After getting my shots I packed my gear away and instead of retreating to the bar, stayed stageside and had a f**king blast. The audience were totally swept along, and by the end of the show everyone was dancing away.

Go see them. Best band in Britain at the moment. Mark my words!

At long last, I got to see Gojira after years of trying. They didn’t disappoint.

Best band I’ve ever seen. I can’t find the words to describe the experience. Maybe perfection.

BLACK STAR RIDERS – March 2017 – Newcastle O2 Academy – REVIEW and GALLERY

BLACK STAR RIDERS – March 2017 – Newcastle O2 Academy – REVIEW and GALLERY

Black Star Riders March 2017 – Newcastle O2 Academy

With the release of their third studio album Black Star Riders prove that dropping the Thin Lizzy name was the right thing to do. The classic twin (and in some places triple) harmony guitar is still there in droves but now in their own brilliant songs.

Ricky Warwick is a great frontman both looking cool as in his shades and leathers, but also in fine vocal form leading the band and crowd through the eighteen song set. However, only four of those came from the new release. The band treat the Friday night crowd to favourites from the previous two releases in almost equal amounts.

The audience eyes are focused (though a lot of the night) on classic rock guitar hero Scott Gorham with his trademark Les Paul. He fires out classic riff after riff and delivers some perfect guitar solos. I can’t help admire him, he could have quite easily seen out his retirement years just belting out the Thin Lizzy classics and lets face it people would have gone and paid to still see it!! However these days they only need to include one Lizzy banger (Boys Are Back In Town) and in the middle of the set too.

The rest of the band are no slouches too boasting ex-Alice Cooper, Y&T, Dokken and more and they just gel on stage playing tight but still having fun.

For me though, the tell tale sign was the the amount of Black Star Rider T-Shirts being worn as opposed to the Lizzy ones which used to be the majority – close run at tonights’ gig, which can only be a good sign!
