Brian Fallon and the Howling Weather – 8th March 2018 – Boiler Shop Newcastle – Review and photos
By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)
Even though it’s only early in the year I think Sleepwalkers will be in a lot of album of the year lists come December. So confident in its content Brian gives the audience 9 of the 12 tracks to savour tonight and they love it!
The title track opens proceedings but with Brian sat at the keyboard and a slight reworking of the arrangement. Fourth song in sees him taking on Tom Waits’ Dirt In The Ground and making it his own!
Only two songs from his album Painkillers (A Wonderful Life and Rosemary) are in the set tonight, but he includes others from his other outlets The Horrible Crows and Molly and the Zombies. The band are fantastic there is just a really relaxed fun atmosphere between them all with Brian telling stories and joking between songs.
Sadly some of what was clearly some funny shit about socks was lost on me as I was enduring that latest disease of gigs “group of people chatting louder than the band” I’m not gonna review song by song as they were all class and you can easily google a setlist. However, it was nice to hear Sultans Of Swing given a run-out and a wonderful piano version of 59 Sound to whet the appetite of those lucky enough to be going to Gaslight anthem upcoming shows.
The ends with album closer See You On The Other Side and U2’s Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For joined by Dave and Tim Hause. I reckon the sold-out Boiler Shop crowd would be waking up somewhat hoarse the following morning as they pretty much sang their heads off start to finish (well except those talking ..yes I’m still bitter about that!!). I wish I had seen Fallon on his previous visits BUT also kinda glad that this was my introduction to his live shows as I will not miss him again ….touch wood.
