The Courtesans – February 2018 – Newcastle O2 Academy – Review and photos
By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)
Performing in almost total darkness for the first ten minutes and having the lead mic not work for a song and a half would put a lot of bands off or cause a strop but not with Courtesans they just do what they do best, work with what they’ve got and play the crap out of their songs!
The darkness just adds menace to their brooding dark songs and the silhouettes of Sinead headbanging away between verses some would think the lack of light was on purpose!
Once the lights were sorted and Agnes swapped mics so that Sineads lead could be heard properly the set took off even more and watching it was easy to forget they were actually tonight’s support (until the shortness of the set reminded you ) Agnes and Vikki are a powerhouse rhythm section providing a solid base for Saffis atmospheric guitar work then add in Sineads vocal and it all comes together in a hypnotic dark electronic soundscape that’s really difficult to put in words (as you can read here ) but see them live and you’ll see what I mean.
