65daysofstatic – December 2017 – Newcastle Boiler Shop
The boiler shop keeps up the run of tremendous gig bookings with UK post-math/rock legends 65daysofstatic.
They’ve played Newcastle countless times, yet I am jinxed when it comes to them and I’ve always managed to miss their shows, gig clashes, lack of funds, bad luck, you name it! That run of luck nearly extended to this gig, nearly, although with the help of some strong painkillers I managed to make it. I’m writing this thinking it probably wasn’t the best idea given my fuzzy mental state but I was determined to see them. No regrets!
65daysofstatic are well known for their epic moody shows with smoke machines and strobe lighting. I felt like I was at a rave with the lighting. Sheer darkness interrupted with strobing explosions, which looked amazing but played hell with my anxiety and painkiller combo! I left the venue frustrated, thinking I’d blown it, no usable photos! It was really like machine gun strobes. Point, shoot and hold the trigger hoping just hoping that one of those exposures would be ok. I needn’t have worried. The shots were tough to get but so bloody worth it!
Their latest release ‘No Man’s Sky: Music For An Infinite Universe’ proved there is life in them yet. They’re carving their own path with a soundtrack for a rather different game. Not only that they’ve been performing a project they call ‘Decomposition Theory’ which is claimed they “harness algorithmic music techniques” to create new music. Quite remarkable stuff. It’s back to business as usual for this gig.
A fully pummeling sensual experience. I must admit the painkillers meant I can barely remember what was going on, an overwhelming immersive world of sound and light. Bloody remarkable band. I’m glad I made it to this one!
