Nothing But Thieves – April 2016 – Newcastle Riverside – REVIEW and PHOTOS

Nothing But Thieves – 12th April 2016 – Newcastle Riverside

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

Not so long ago these young chaps were having bother selling tickets here in Toon but they kept coming back growing each time until selling out Riverside in no time for tonight’s show! Although I have been listening to them for a while due to being sent the stuff from the promo company this is the first time I’ve caught them live due to gig clashes previously. It is great to see the young gig goers getting in early and going mad for all the bands on the bill. It must give the support acts a massive incentive to keep going, instead of the usual half-arsed attendance a lot of older bands get during early sets!

I have to admit being a bit skeptical going in as Conor Mason has such a vocal range that in  this day and age could be “all studio”. However this was not the case and boy can this guy sing! He hit every high register in every song and nailed it as a frontman. The rest of the band are no slackers either, giving it 100% start to finish. Many say they can hear Jeff Buckley, Muse etc in their influences, mainly based around Conor’s voice. Especially in the likes of  ‘If I Get High’ and ‘Itch’, so it was nice to hear them give a shout out to the Pixies as one of their heroes and treat the kids to a cracking version of ‘Where Is My Mind’.

They are also currently supporting Muse at the bands request in the huge arenas which is great practice cos believe me it won’t be that long before they are headlining them themselves!
