Carl Stacey – INTERVIEW

Graeme caught up with Carl to talk about his latest project and grab a few shots.

He’s probably one of the hardest working musicians around in the local scene and is always striving to evolve his work. His passion and talent is pretty impressive. His band Didact play Trillians on the 1st October. Head down and see for yourself 😉

For those who don’t already know can you give us an introduction?
My name is Carl Stacey, I play guitar in Didact, Stone Lights and of course my solo project.

How would you describe your music to people?
I would describe it as instrumental prog, with an ambient touch. Those words just came to my head right now, but that’s how I would describe the sound of my music.

You’re known for other projects in the Newcastle area. Can you give a brief intro to those projects and why you started a solo project?
As mentioned before I play guitar in the progressive metal band Didact and Guitar/ Vocals in the acoustic rock band Stone Lights. Both bands have been playing various gigs and releasing music over the course of a couple years now, but as far as this solo project goes, I had a lot of music and ideas written for songs that didn’t fit either of the bands, yet I was really happy with how they sounded so I decided that I would release them under my own name so I was still able to get them out there.

We’ve discussed your productivity and involvement in creative type projects in the past. What drives you to do these projects? You seem to thrive when involved in artistic work.
I really enjoy art as a whole, whether it is music, photography or any other form of art. I love the fact that art lets you express how you feel in any way you want to. That is what drives me. I would say a lot of my drive also comes from seeing what Tom Delonge (Blink 182/ Angels and Airwaves) is doing right now, releasing movies, short films and comic books that all feature sound tracks written and recorded by himself, this is something that really inspires me and something that I’d love to be able to do one day.

Will there be any solo shows? Or is it a studio project only?
At first this project was just a studio project to me, and it still is, but recently I have found myself wanting to play the songs live, I’d love to be able to get some kind of band behind me to be able to play the songs I’m so proud of live, eventually one day soon. Who knows when it will be but I am thinking about it right now!

How did it feel to release the debut album?
It feels amazing, really amazing. I decided at the age of 11 (when I started playing guitar) that I would have released an album (with or without a band) by the age of 20, so once I turned 20 I did just that. It feels amazing to have finally achieved such a long time goal.

Was it a self produced project?
I did everything on this album, all of the writing, recording, producing and mixing etc, everything is me, besides all of the artwork that was designed for the CD.
