I caught up with the amazing Nic Wood (that’s his stage name) for an interview and an insight into his new direction. I’ve nabbed something of a world exclusive. His new vision is quite interesting, off the wall and strangely inspiring. I’m still fairly shocked about the whole thing to be honest (but most artists are a quirky bunch I suppose). His brilliant new album is days away from release.
No more of that bloke with the acoustic guitar… read on to find out more…
For those who don’t already know can you give us an introduction?
Hello! My name is Guadalupe Collins from The Promised Land of Jamaica man!
What got you started?
When I was 6 years old I was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called ‘The Santiago Effect’ which effected my speech. Everything I said sounded like it was coming out of Gilbert Gottfried.
* GJB – research led me to this clip
People were so annoyed by this I started to sing to placate the irritation and I never looked back, although I can never watch Aladdin again for fear of a relapse.
How would you describe your music to people? And how has the sound evolved over the years?
Steel Pan drums. Lots and lots of Steel Pan Drums
Who is the biggest influence for you?
You know that beeping sound the microwave makes when it’s done, that. I made a concept album around that sound. It is 3 hours long. Also Nickelback. I f**king love Nickelback.
What was the pivotal thing that got you into music?
I am far too ugly and morose as a person to have sex with multiple attractive people or get free drugs. So that really.
Do you release your own material or are you signed?
I give it to pigeons and just see what happens. Their RAM is utter shite though, you can only send 10 seconds of music at a time.
You have played all over the Northeast, where is your favourite place to play and why?
Playing gigs in restaurants is always nice because everyone inevitably leaves because they went there to have their dinners and not be aurally assaulted. Also you get free cake. That’s what it’s all about. The Free Cake.
If you could play anywhere with any support bands of your choice, what would be your ‘dream’ show?
In Nando’s with Jimmy Buffet. So it would be a Nando’s Buffet. I’m chasing that Black Card.
Best gig memories?
I have no memories as I have a crippling addiction to Sherbert. My brain is as fizzy as a bastard and I just can’t shake it loose.
What are your plans for the immediate future and any long term goals?
I need to go to the toilet, we’ll see what happens after that.
I’ll start screaming in the middle of the street tomorrow morning if anyone wants to come and see me get arrested?
Who or what is your top tip for local music?
The bloke who sculpts that dog out of sand. I reckon he’s got a tune in him
So can we hear some of the new stuff?
If it’ll shut you up, yeah go on then. Click here to view his exclusive new video.
