EnterTheLexicon | King Canute | Ilser
Newcastle, Head of Steam, 24th February 2015

It feels like a long time since I last saw these guys, they always put on a great show so there was no way I was missing this one! They’ve been busy working on new material and tonight we got a nice dose of what is to come.

Opening up for Lexicon tonight we have Ilser. I saw these in the same venue early in 2014 and my word they have progressed hugely since then. The three piece Newcastle based band are now even heavier and louder than I remember, they’ve really taken their sound somewhere interesting. Perhaps Marmozets have been an influence?  Strong, confident performance and some great tunes. One to watch out for.

King Canute are up next. Having had some bad luck thanks to the dreaded tour lurgy the previous night in Glasgow I was grateful to find that they would be fit to play tonight. Another two piece band (featuring a drummer and a bass player/vocalist), it does seem to be a rather popular trend at the moment. I suspect Royal Blood have inspired a few bands to take up this ‘minimal’ approach. Minimal in number of musicians, not noise that is! The duo make enough racket that I’m sure the people in the bar upstairs will assume a full band is rocking out down here. The vocals seem a little strained, but that is not surprising considering the tonsillitis!

The crowd is nicely warmed up and ready for hometown headliners EnterTheLexicon. Luckily for us the tour lurgy seems to have bypassed the lads as they seem full of energy and raring to go. Everyone dashes to the front in time for them to burst in their first song, and a new one if I’m not mistaken. A blistering version of ‘Full Moon’ followed and the song shows exactly why they have gained such a loyal following. Everyone in the crowd seems to be dancing and singing along, it felt like one great homecoming party. A slew of impressive new songs followed. With songs like these I am awaiting an album with eager anticipation, these songs are hugely infectious.

Tonight is the first time I’ve seen them since last summer when they made our Band of the Month for June 2014. Far too long! Another absolutely brilliant band from the rising Newcastle scene.
