Stone Lights – Exclusive photoshoot and interview

Stone Lights – Exclusive photoshoot and interview August 2014

Stone Lights entered a recent competition on our Facebook page for the chance to win a promo shoot with GJB Performance Photography. They won by a landslide thanks to their loyal fans, who voted for them in large numbers! If you’re familiar with the local gig scene in Newcastle and Sunderland you’re more than likely to have come across this hard working duo. I caught up with Carl and Dan for the shoot and a chat.

Who are you, where are you based?
We are Stone Lights, from Gateshead and Newcastle.

You play regularly as an acoustic duo, any plans to expand or do you prefer the more personal vibe of a two piece?
When we first decided to start making music together we knew we only wanted to be a two piece band. This was for the purpose of the Acoustic style we were going for at the time. We both have full bands outside of this duo so we will most likely always be duo, unless we decide otherwise in the future. But for right now, being a duo is lot easier and really exciting for us.

Covers or originals and how would you describe your music to people?
We started off as a covers band, this was because we really wanted to cover a list of songs together and upload them to Youtube. After we had moderate success uploading the covers and playing them at gigs we decided we wanted to write our own music. I would say our music is primarily Acoustic Rock, with influences from many other genres and styles of music including Blues and Pop Punk.

What got you started?
We both became really good friends after we first met each other and we both knew we wanted to start a project like this eventually, after a few months of waiting and becoming closer friends we decided it was the right time to do so.

Who is the biggest influence for the duo?
I would say the biggest influence on our music as a whole would be the band This Wild Life, they are also an Acoustic Rock duo like us so you can understand why. Their music really speaks to us. We also supported them at their first Newcastle gig, that was an amazing accomplishment for us.

Where did the band name come from? And any rejected names?
Dan came up with our name, it is based off a song by the band The Word Alive. We didn’t have any rejected names, Dan suggested this name, we both liked it and stuck with it.

What was the pivotal thing that got you into music?
I can’t speak for Dan on this question but, personally what got me into music at a very young age was my Dad, he brought me up on Rock and Metal so it was almost imprinted on me to get into music or become a musician, I started playing guitar at the age of 11 and have been very passionate about it ever since. I know that Dan has always been into music since a young age also.

What are your plans for the immediate future and any long term goals?
We want to continue to grow musically, release more music, play more gigs in the north east and outside the north east, tour, release our debut music video and enjoy the whole process.

Do you record and release your own material?
Yes we recorded and released our debut EP Slow And Steady by ourselves.

Who or what is your top tip for local music?
I would say, try your best make the right contacts, as long as you always have the right contacts you can always get things done.

Next show?
As of right now we don’t have any upcoming shows, but we have played plenty of awesome ones this summer so far, that we have really enjoyed. If you want to keep up to date with our next show you can visit our Facebook or Twitter page.
